Islam Today

Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world, with some even predicting that it will overtake Christianity by the end of the century. Today, Islam has been largely associated with the terrorist attacks and mass murder we see in the news all too often. However, it is important to note that many Muslims condemn this violence, especially using the Islamic faith to justify the violence. They are also frequently victims of violence and hate crimes themselves. The majority of Muslims have negative views of these terrorist organizations, especially those in countries with high Muslim populations.

The Islam world today has also been shaped by immigration into America and Western Europe. Where Islam in the 20th century was shaped by the development of nation states in the Islamic world, Islam in the 21st century looks a bit different, with Muslims attempting to adapt to the modern world without losing the roots of their religion. Modern Muslims are finding more flexibility in their religion that allows them to exist in harmony with the rest of the world. As this article from The Atlantic states, "The central problem facing Arab Muslims, and indeed all Muslims, today is how to find a new way of life—Islamic in character—which will be halfway between the East and the West and which will provide the internal stability necessary to enable Muslims to face their problems independently."
